YFOV is taking part in a show especially about art produced on or using vinyl 12” records.

It’s opening on the 4th of June (for 2 weeks) in the Funhouse Gallery Detroit. It also happens to be the opening party for the Gallery as well. The organizer of the gallery contact your face on vinyl to take part in the show, it’s been a good few months in the making and so we are very excited to be exhibiting a mix of old and new work. Any work left unsold will be posted on the website for purchase (which will also symbolize the launch of the web store – fingers crossed!)

So YFOV sent a selection of 10 records (mostly singles and 1 triptych) to include in the exhibition which features over 50 other artists from all over the world. We are very excited to take part in the exhibition and will be sure to post some pictures of the event. This is the first time that YFOV is going to exhibit in America, so high hopes indeed!

No this is NOT a vinyl toy show- does the world really need to manufacture more vinyl crap for creative types to paint on? We think not. We believe there’s more than enough Ray Coniff Singers and Air Supply vinyl records to go around for the next 100 years.

Here is a sneak preview of one of the vinyl’s YFOV is exhibiting; it’s a Frank Zappa piece one of the greatest experimental rock n roll musicians of all time, this does him enough justice, but it’s hard to sum up a man who produced such an eclectic and amazing body of work. This is our dedication to him to paint him on a medium which most of his music was released on… And hopefully YFOV has managed to capture Frank Zappa looking iconic and classy created using a stencil and spray paint painted onto a 12” vinyl record.

No Mothers of invention records were harmed in this process...

This is an example of a carefully planned out order from your face on vinyl. The client told us he’d like to give his friends “the ultimate wedding gift”… We don’t take the word “ultimate” lightly. We asked the client to send over some images of the happy couple and sat on it for a bit. Actually this is the first time YFOV got an order of such prestige. As we’ve stated before your happiness is our reward (the money doesn’t hurt either).

After a little thought we had a meeting with the client and discussed some ideas. The idea was to make 3 different prints; one based on a photo of the bride, one of the groom and one vinyl with the happy couple together in order to celebrate the unity and the occasion.

We toyed around with a few ideas. One idea was to use opposing colours on the bride / groom print and combine those colours on the vinyl art stencil when they are both pictured together. Kind of a yin-yang theorem, although the conceptual idea is a good one, the actual translation on idea to physical medium would not work; too many complexities and jarring colours. In the end we decided that good quality image and colour balance rules over complex artistic interpretations which would likely be lost on many. First and foremost is the actual graphic output.

We suggested to the client we would like to create a visual matrix of the wedding couple. Using the number nine (records) to make a nice wall hanging shape and taking inspiration from Andy Warhol’s piece of Marilyn Monroe where a screen print of her face using different colours is tessellated to provide a graphically pleasing result. However we decided to take it one step further and give the client a chance to hang the artwork in any way they please. The vinyl record art can be hung in a grid like matrix, or in a row, vertically or horizontally… or they can even distribute them around the house. Using our custom made wall hanging system the happy couple could also change the order and sequence of the records based on whim. Re-arranging and adjusting to created new home décor layouts whenever they please! Lastly it’s very important to mention that we at your face on vinyl do not use traditional screen printing techniques, we rely much more on a human aspect when hand cut stencils and spray paints were used to create these records. The result…A kind of Warhol / Banksy mashup, with an interactive twist. We hope that next time we can create something even more unique, engaging and interesting.

Your face on vinyl is a portrait service. We take your photo and turn it into a unique hand-made piece of art. In this example the Bride and the Groom’s photographs were transformed into stencils using a human controlled process, the stencils were hand cut and then sprayed using premium quality Spray Paint and finished with tough stain proof lacquer. Each piece is uniquely made by hand therefore it is impossible that any two records will be the same.
